Antlers vs. Tree

Antler Rubbing on a Tree is Explained

This small Douglas fir tree shows fresh damage caused by a buck rubbing its antlers on the bark. The darker colored edges of the wound in the bark will eventually turn brown as this sign ages. While it is fresh, the bruising and damage is more apparent. The lighter color of the tree's exposed cambium layer shows some grooves cut by the antlers.

During the rutting season, in the fall, bucks rub their antlers on trees. They also use their antlers to thrash smaller bushes and shrubs. In a separate video clip, I will show you a buck doing that to a shrub.
