Rough-Skinned Newt Making Tracks

Watch the locomotion of a rough-skinned newt (salamander)
(Taricha granulosa)

Newts and salamanders have an interesting method of locomotion. When you watch this video, you will see how they move. A rough-skinned newt is walking in some soft mud and is leaving some very nice tracks. Trackers can learn what newt tracks look like as you watch the video.

These newts have four toes on the front feet and five toes on the hind feet. As you can see, sometimes the tail leaves a drag mark in the trail. Tracking newts can be difficult because you need nearly perfect mud conditions for their tracks to make an impression. They are lightweight animals, so the soil can't be too coarse. Fine silty mud is perfect.
