Female Salmon Laying Eggs

Depositing Eggs in the Redd

The female salmon sits in her nest and carefully places some eggs in the gravel. Notice that she stays relatively still when she does this. Perhaps this is to prevent any eggs from being lost if she were to move too quickly and create a current. As it is, eggs are frequently swept from the gravel by the strong current. Notice also that the redd is lower than the surrounding gravel, which helps to keep the egg site out of the stronger currents. The entire redd looks like a hollowed-out bowl in the riverbed. They are noticeable from above because they lack algae, which covers the rest of the riverbed at this time of year. A single female salmon can deposit thousands of eggs. Of those, only a small percentage will survive to become adult fish and return to their native stream to spawn.
