How to Identify a Cougar Track Video |
|
In this video, I show a cougar track and point
out some of the features that will help you identify it. Comparisons
to dog tracks are offered. The tracks of dogs and cougars can seem
similar to non-trackers. They have a roughly similar shape, as well
as the same number of toes. They are also similar in size. Because
of this, the tracks of these two species are frequently confused.
Even experienced trackers can have trouble telling some of them
apart if the tracks aren't clear, or if any details have been
blurred or obscured. It is best to use several tracks to make your
identification in cases like that. A single-track identification can
be wrong very easily. Follow the trail a bit and pick up more
details about the tracks the animal is leaving, then make your
decision as to the animal's identity. Your trailing skills will
improve and you will gain more knowledge about the tracks as you go. Experienced trackers will note several things wrong in this video. Can you point them out? This is a good test of your observation skill. :) |
