Pileated Woodpecker Sign Video |
|
Pileated woodpeckers are very large birds that
leave distinctive sign. One sign you are likely to see is their work
on logs and dead snag trees in the forest. Many species of insects
use these trees for shelter, food, and depositing of eggs. One
species is the carpenter ant. The pileated woodpecker eats these
ants. To get at them, it removes large chunks of wood and follows
the galleries, or tunnels, these ants make in the wood. It eats the
ants as it works. Pileated woodpeckers thus contribute to the
ecology of an area by helping to break down large woody debris. A
log will eventually be completely broken down and its stored
nutrients go back to the soil. Insects, woodpeckers, fungi, and
moisture all contribute to the process of breaking down logs. Pileated woodpecker scat is full of ant exoskeletons and can often be found at these feeding sites below logs. |
