A banana slug with its scat. Banana slug scat is one of the most common signs you will find that indicate the presence of this critter. The scat is expelled from the hole on the side of the slug's "head." The hole is located on the right side of the head. |

Close-up of banana slug scat. Their scats may be deposited on walls, the ground, leaves, tree bark, and many other locations. Just about anywhere you find the slugs!) The other commonly seen sign is the slime trail. Slugs leave a continuous line of slime, unlike snails, which leave discontinuous spots of slime. |

Banana slugs are quite common in my area. They are often active during and after rainstorms. During the summer, they can be seen on cool mornings, but retreat to more sheltered and moist locations during the heat of the day. They are active year-round.
