Mountain Lion / Cougar Track Video

Puma concolor

This video clip shows you some of the characteristics that will help you identify mountain lion or cougar tracks in the field. The track shown is a left hind track. Cougars leave asymmetrically aligned tracks. The toes do no line up right next to each other as do those of canines. There is usually a leading toe clearly visible in a mountain lion track. This is toe number 3. Toes are numbered beginning with the innermost toe and going outward from there. (i.e. a human's big toe would be toe number 1) In a mountain lion track, toe number 3 is the leading toe. The position of this toe will tell you whether you have a right or left track. The overall shape of the track, and the size of the heel pad will help you tell front from hind tracks. Look closely for cougar tracks whenever you hike in wild country. We share these environments with cougars, but they are rarely seen. The tracks and signs left behind by this stealthy animal may be the only indication of its presence in an area.
